This project aims to describe a place not as a locality, not as a particular landscape, but through objects and artefacts in which the place manifests itself.

The project “Out of Place” acts as an archive of stories about the objects brought in UK by the Baltic Russian immigrants.  The stories often intersect  and overlay each other, and the identity of the place  develops through the multitude of voices. The name of the project “ Out of Place” hints (among the evident reference to the “outofplaceness” ), also to the particular place from which the objects were brought from. This place is factored out , that is to say while not being visually presented,  it still underpins the project. The place functions and manifests itself through the objects.
